Come make a splash this summer in Huskies Group Swim Lessons! American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics Levels and Preschool Aquatics levels are being offered at the SDC Pool. Social distancing will be maintained during classes and instructors will remain on the pool deck. A parent is required to be in the water with each participant.

The COVID-19 Visitor Symptom Tracking Form is required to be completed by all participants and guardians before every class session. Masks are required throughout the building except while swimming or showering. There are no provisions for medical intolerance reasons or medical waivers. Space will be provided for personal items on the pool deck. Class size is limited and based on social distancing. Showering is required before entering the water.

 SDC Pool

The Student Development Complex lap pool and dive tank are licensed by the State of Michigan and inspected by the Western U.P. District Health Department. Accordingly, the water is analyzed and the temperature is taken daily. The new heating system keeps the water at a constant 82-83 degrees.

Special Requirements


All students must have appropriate swimwear (no cutoffs or street clothes) and a towel. Students should bring goggles. A parent or legal guardian is required to sign a waiver of liability and concussion awareness form for all youth classes.

Preschool Aquatics


Ages:
4-5 years

A parent is required to be in the water with each participant.


Description:
Preschool Aquatics is designed to orient young preschoolers to the aquatic environment and to help them gain basic aquatic skills. In addition, participants start learning about how to be safe around water.

Learning Objectives:

  • Techniques for entering and exiting the water
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Bobbing
  • Retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Body control and manipulation in the water
  • Tread water using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front and back
  • Treading water
  • Learn water safety skills
  • No previous swimming lesson skills or history needed to participate in this level.

    Session 1: June 14-25

    Registration closes June 12, 11:59 pm.


    Session 2: July 5-16

    Registration closes July 3, 11:59 pm.


    Session 3: July 19-30

    Registration closes July 17, 11:59 pm.

    Session $100 per participant

    Registration and payment can be completed online, by phone at 906-487-2073, or at the SDC Ticket Office. A parent or legal guardian is required to sign a waiver of liability and concussion awareness form for all youth classes.

    About the Aquatics Manager

    Ann Bengry, Aquatics Manager


    Ann Bengry comes to Michigan Tech from Saginaw Valley State University, where she served as the Assistant Swimming and Diving coach for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. At SVSU, Annie led the sprint group and coordinated the Cardinal Aquatic Swim Lessons program. Annie attended Saint Leo University, where she served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams from 2015-2018. While earning her Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Business, she helped assist in coaching multiple All-American student-athletes and guided several student-athletes to national qualifying performances.

    Prior to Saint Leo, Annie, a native of Marquette, MI, served as a volunteer coach for Northern Michigan University’s Women’s Swim Team while earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Science.

    A former collegiate swimmer and diver, Annie also trained for three years as an Olympic weightlifter at the US Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University. Annie has also served as a swim coach, lifeguard, swim instructor, and aquatics assistant at the YMCA of Marquette County and the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. She is a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and Water Safety Instructor.
